      Hi jamielintern,
It might be a very useful thing to have but if, sometime in the future, we invent a time machine, wouldn’t we already have come back to tell ourselves not to do certain things or how to win the lotto?

I don’t think we will, even though it might be a nice thing to do!

      Hi Jamie
This is probably the most popular idea that science fiction writers ever thought up, but science fiction it is destined to remain. The thinking is that if some time in the future humans had come up with a way of travelling through time, then they would have come back by now to tell us. But no-one has ever had an encounter with someone who had come back to us from the future. Makes for great stories and movies though.

Hi Jamie. I wish that it was true – there are certainly plenty of things that I would like to try to do again, and The Doctor’s life style certainly looks like fun! I am not a physicist, but sadly I think that it is pretty unlikely. From my understanding, Stephen Hawking says that it might theoretically be possible through something called wormholes, but not for people…

hi jamie i really dont think so!! To travel back in time doesn’t seem possible – physicists like to talk about the arrow of time, going from the past into the present. To go the opposite way seems very unlikely!
Time though does go a different speeds for different objects, depending on how fast the object is going. The difference though is slight until the object is going at a large fraction of the speed of light – something we don’t do on a day-to-day basis!
