Hi bethany. Malaria cells! Malaria are single celled parasites, that live inside other cells for most of their life. The stage of their life that I am most interested in is when the malaria cells invade our red blood cells, which they live inside for a couple of days, chew up all the hemoglobin (the protein that takes oxygen around your body) for food to fuel their growth and multiplication, then break open the red blood cells to infect new ones. Malaria parasite cells are quite small, about 1/4 the size of ours, but they kill a million children every year. Fascinating and deadly – I never get tire of looking at them!
