Sorry alpha male and oliver, not even my kids know! Scientists are generally paid pretty well compared to the average national salary, but not as well as some other professions like doctors or lawyers. However, we get a whole lot of other perks, of which the most important is being able to work on things that really fascinate you, and to follow our own scientific instincts and not be told what to work on by other people. We are our own bosses! That freedom and flexibility is fantastic, and is one of the things that has allowed science to develop so fast.
